William Kendrick was 48 when he first visited Jerusalem in 1975. His early work there was influenced by the American School of Realism, and he made his palette a true and accurate representation of color and tone in Israel season by season.

By the time of the final painting in this collection in 1992, his palette had changed dramatically. He had returned to Jerusalem infused with the light and color of the years he had spent in the south of France. As he looked again across the Old City, he saw everything bathed in gold.
